Troubleshooting:"Close" doesn't close the program

"Close" doesn't close the program

This started last week.  When i close my workbook, the workbook closes but the Excel program remains open, with that big gray empty area.  I usually use the red X to close (NOT the X for the workbook) but I've also starting trying every other way to close
the document / program, but they all do the same thing.  I hope there's an easy answer but I can't find it.  Thanks.

Solutions to the Problem "Close" doesn't close the program

Open Excel > review > verify if protected workbook is enabled.
Browse to the below locations and remove the files from the startup folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART
C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART
Note: Take a backup of files before deleting the files.
If there is no files in the startup folders then unregister and reregister Excel.
Click start> type ’Excel /unreg’ without quotes in search program and files
Once done
Click start> type ’Excel /regserver’ without quotes in search program and files
And check if it works fine.
